Deborah Ortiz is a lifelong resident of Sacramento. Her grandparents came to Sacramento in the 1930s. Her family moved from working in the fields, then to the canneries and eventually to State service. Deborah has led a life of public service focusing on health and education.
She was a leader in the largest Planned Parenthood affiliate protecting reproductive health. Her work with the California Primary Care Association got Obamacare running for community clinics and health centers in California.
As a State Senator, Deborah passed America’s first law legalizing stem cell research and created the California Department of Public Health that saved lives during COVID.
On the Board of Supervisors, Deborah will bring both passion and smarts to helping Sacramentans live longer and healthier lives.

Dear friends, family and supporters….
The election dust has settled and we know we will not be on the November ballot.
The results show Cofer at 45.6%, Guerra at 29.4%, us at 15.3% and Riley 9.7%.
November should be interesting…
Thank you all from the bottom of my heart.
* You had nothing to gain in this race - no special interest agenda.
* You believed in me and my desire to serve at a critical time for poor and working class communities, women and immigrants.
* You spent months writing checks, letters, providing great food and wine…
* Old friends reconnected and many, many new friendships were formed.
And you all kept me going…
Why it took so long for me to thank you
* I had to get back to everyday life… home projects, eye exams, Los Rios and Planning Commission duties.
* And I had to quickly pivot to open a campaign committee for my November reelection to Los Rios as I will face a challenger from the "she's too old, move aside, change movement".
And … I needed to refuel, contemplate, enjoy my backyard respite and bond with our ever annoying prima dona, Reina.
What the results show
* We were outraised 10 to 1 by Eric’s campaign and at least 3 to1 by Flo’s campaign.
* One candidate spent nearly $270,000 (likely more when the next reports come out) from their controlled campaign committees and also benefited from nearly $458,000 spent by seven independent expenditure committees- realtors, developers, businesses, corporations. Nearly $800,000 total!
* We raised a modest but adequate $85,000 – enough to deliver our mail program. Our donors were friends, family, regular people. No PACs, no corporations, no developers, builders, realtors, apartment associations.
One candidate’s independent expenditure supporters - the Realtors - spent $101,000 attacking me with mail and digital campaign hits.
The money spent attacking me exceeded what we spent in our whole campaign!
The other candidate retained strong momentum established during the mayoral race less than 2 years ago and built upon that support. They also raised around $300,000 – many donors outside of California as part of the “change” movement.
If you break down the cost per vote for each candidate,
• we got the biggest bang for our small bucks : ) at $7.88 per vote.
• Eric spent the most per vote - $34.58 per vote.
• Flo spent $9.31 per vote.
In the end, I am reminded of the saying that "voters decide elections, not candidates”. Voters voted for “change” and not “experience”. We actually had persons say, "yes, you are the most experienced but that isn't what we need now". Interesting.
What’s next
* I would love for us to gather after I file in mid-July for reelection to Los Rios. We need to gather and celebrate our friendship and talk about how we stay engaged and committed to serving our region. Stay tuned for your invite!
* I miss every one of you and am so very grateful for your belief in my candidacy and your sacrifice in time, money and love!
